Abstract	A new species of freshwater prawn of the family Palaemonidae, Macrobrachium johnsoni spec. nov., is described from southern Peninsular Malaysia. Notes on live colouration, habitat, and larval development are provided. The first zoea of this new species is also described in detail. A comparison is made between M. johnsoni and a closely related species, M. pilimanus (De Man, 1879).
