Abstract	The main diagnostic characters of Riparia riparia and R. diluta are discussed based on fresh examinations of extensive material. The opinion of Zarudny that his subspecies innominata belongs to R. riparia is validated, but the series of syntypes of R. riparia innominata includes birds of both these sand martin species, and a lectotype is designated for R. r. innominata Zarudny 1916.
