| Abstract | A large number of isolated cheek teeth and a mandibular fragment of porcupines from the Late Pleistocene fissure deposits near Punung, Java, are compared with extant H. (Acanthion) brachyura Linnaeus, 1758 (southeast Asia) and H. (Acanthion) javanica (F. Cuvier, 1823) (Java). Middle Pleistocene and Holocene specimens from Java are compared with the latter species. The Punung specimens belong to one species and are considered a new subspecies, Hystrix brachyura punungensis subsp. nov. The Middle Pleistocene specimens are allocated to Hystrix brachyura subsp. and those from the Holocene to Hystrix javanica. |
