Discovery of a population of the lesser mottled grasshopper Stenobothrus stigmaticus on the Dutch coast (Orthoptera) During an inventory of the nature reserve De Vroongronden between the towns of Renesse and Burg-Haamstede (province of Zeeland) the first population of the lesser mottled grasshopper Stenobothrus stigmaticus in the western part of the Netherlands was discovered. It was found in low dunes with a vegetation dominated by grass, sedges and moss. The animals are not very mobile and the nearest populations are at least 80 km away. Therefore, it is most probable that it concerns an old population and not a recent colonisation. Hopefully the discovery will initiate further research in this region.
