Inventarisatie van de landslakken van Noord-Brabant (Mollusca: Gastropoda).

The distribution of the land snails of the province of Noord-Brabant (Mollusca: Gastropoda) In 2003 and 2004 the landsnail fauna of the province of Noord-Brabant (in the south of the Netherlands) was mapped. In total 251 soil and litter samples were taken and on 272 localities records were gathered on sight. The large amount of new records contributes significantly to the knowledge of the land snail fauna of the province of Noord-Brabant and the Netherlands. In total 72 species were found in 2003 and 2004. No less than 13 species of the 41 land snails from the Dutch red list have been found in Noord-Brabant. Three of these could not be recovered during the inventories in 2003 and 2004. Of these, Limacus flavus probably is still present and was simply overlooked as it is mainly present in cities. It is not clear if the other two (Helix pomatia and Helicella itala) still occur. Especially the last one has become very scarce in the Netherlands, nowadays being largely confined to the chalky southeast of the country. It can be concluded that the province is not only species-rich but is also rich in endangered species. The presence of Zonitoides excavatus is especially valuable as this species has a restricted range and has become scarce in parts of its range. In the province of Noord-Brabant it was, however, found to be fairly common, being present in all but few of the sampled old oak forests.
