Crocuta crocuta and Hyaena hyaena use a walking gait with lateral sequence and couplets. The duration of contact between the fore feet and the ground is always longer than that of the hind feet. C. crocuta varies the pace angle (slow walk) and the duty factor (fast walk) between the fore and hind limbs to compensate the effect of the relatively long fore limbs on the mode of locomotion. Fast symmetrical gaits were not observed. Both species use the transverse gallop for faster locomotion.
