It is with deep regret that the editors of BIJDRAGEN TOT DE DIERKUNDE and the staff of the Zoölogisch Museum, Amsterdam, have to announce the sudden decease of Prof. Dr. Hendrik Engel in his home town Almen (province of Gelderland) at the age of 83 years. Until his retirement in 1968, at the age of 70 years, Engel was Professor of Systematic and Geographic Zoology at the University of Amsterdam and Director of the Zoölogisch Museum of Amsterdam. In this function, he was supervisor of the Artis Library and as such he served for many years on the editorial board of the periodical issued by this library, the Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde. In the course of his editorship, the journal was brought to life again after a long period of irregular appearance, due to post-war conditions and the pre-war economic recess.
