In addition to the previously reported Cyrtomium falcatum, a second Asian species of the fern genus Cyrtomium has recently been recorded for The Netherlands: C. fortunei. This species was first recorded in 1992 in Rotterdam and showed up in Belgium in 2002. Hitherto, the species has been found in 28 sites in the Low Countries, of which 9 in The Netherlands and 19 in Belgium. This paper provides an identification key in order to facilitate the identification of both species. Furthermore, the currently known distribution of Cyrtomium falcatum and C. fortunei in the Low Countries is briefly described and some ecological comments are given. Finally, the recent influx of exotic mural ferns – in particular in urban habitats where frostbite is less likely – is being discussed.
