About 10 years ago no recent records of Gagea villosa were known for the Netherlands; formerly it occurred in more than 30 hour-squares. Since 1969 the species has been recorded from 4 localities, in each case growing in rather thin lawns or on little trodden paths. It is possible, that the species may be found in more hour-squares in the Netherlands, as G. villosa can survive vegetatively for long periods.
