In 2003, a large population of Gagea minima was discovered under linden trees on the ‘Leyduin’ estate near Bloemendaal, Province of North Holland, the Netherlands. Gagea minima is a new species for the Netherlands. The natural distribution area of the species is Central and East Europe, where it grows in deciduous forests. The nearest populations are located at 300–450 km distance at least in Germany and Denmark. It is a mystery how the species arrived in ‘Leyduin’. There is a possibility, that the species has been planted there. It may even have been planted there by Linnaeus himself, who lived for 3 years in the proximity of ‘Leyduin’.
