In late April 2012, Carex colchica J.Gay was found growing along sandy stretches of roadside over 10 km in length, between Hardenberg (Province of Overijssel) and Coevorden (Province of Drenthe). The species was very abundant in these stretches. Due to their conspicuously straw-coloured inflorescences present at that time, the plants were easy to spot by car. The massive occurrence of C. colchica, which had hitherto been considered rare in the Netherlands, called for further investigation of the actual distribution of this species in the central and eastern regions of this country.
