It is demonstrated that Digitalis purpurea has occurred in the same locality near Bergum in the province of Friesland for more than 200 years. D. de Gorter already recorded the plant there as early as 1781. D. purpurea has been considered a garden escape in the northern part of the Netherlands. However, since the locality near Bergum was far removed from human dwellings in the eighteenth century, and since it is obvious that D. purpurea grows there naturally now, it seems better to regard it as a native species in this particular area.
