In preparation for the forthcoming edition of the Dutch Flora (Heukels’ Flora van Nederland), the effects of recent molecular phylogenetic studies on the classification of the plant family Scrophulariaceae in its traditional circumscription are discussed. The results of these studies have major consequences for the classification of the Scrophulariaceae, as well as the families Orobanchaceae, Phrymaceae, and Plantaginaceae. The implications of a new classification for the Dutch Flora are discussed and the importance of using up-to-date classifications in our floras, reflecting current knowledge of evolutionary relationships in plants, are underlined.
