In the Netherlands, Festuca ovina s. str. (= F. ovina subsp. hirtula) is a very rare taxon, which has often been overlooked. A number of new records is reported from the Veluwe area, all on military ranges, growing in pioneer grasslands (Spergulo-Corynephoretum), dense grasslands on sand (Trifolio-Festucetalia), heathlands (Genisto anglicae-Callunetum), mesophylous fringes (Melampyro-Holcetea), and Scotch Pine forests (LeucobryoPinetum empetretosum).
